What Is Short-Term Accommodation (STA) and How Can It Help You?

Sometimes, a change of scenery can change everything. Whether it’s a weekend away to recharge or a few days of respite for carers, short-term accommodation (STA) plays a vital role in supporting both NDIS participants and their families.

At Grow Together Supports, we see STA as more than just a place to stay—it’s an experience. Our STA(y) Together program is designed to provide a safe, enjoyable, and personalised break from daily routines. Participants get the chance to explore new environments, try new activities, and build new connections, all while receiving the support they need.

But what exactly is STA under the NDIS? Short-Term Accommodation is funding that allows participants to access alternative housing for up to 14 days at a time. It can be used for respite, building independence, or exploring different types of living arrangements. It covers the cost of accommodation, personal care, meals, and activities during the stay.

For participants, STA offers a chance to develop life skills in a different setting. Away from their usual environment, they can practise independence, build resilience, and enjoy a bit of adventure. For carers, it provides a much-needed break to rest and recharge, knowing their loved one is in safe and capable hands.

At Grow Together, our STA experiences are built around the individual. We take the time to understand each participant’s interests, comfort levels, and support needs. Whether it’s a beachside weekend, a trip to the country, or a local city escape, we create an itinerary that’s both relaxing and enriching.

Participants are supported by familiar staff wherever possible, and every element of the stay is thoughtfully planned—from accessible accommodation to meal choices and entertainment. We also make sure to incorporate community activities, so participants have the opportunity to engage socially and try new things.

The benefits of STA extend beyond the stay itself. Participants often return home with increased confidence, a stronger sense of independence, and a new perspective on what they’re capable of achieving. For many, it opens the door to future possibilities, including Supported Independent Living.

Importantly, STA is also about fun. Life should be enjoyable—and everyone deserves the chance to explore, connect, and unwind. With Grow Together Supports, every STA experience is filled with care, laughter, and memories.

If you or someone you support is interested in STA, we’d love to help you explore what’s possible. Let’s make your next break something to remember—for all the right reasons.
